I've tried again, I know it's not family sharing at fault here, that's just a byproduct of the problem, but the lack of separate users at the top level login. Not sure they've quite grasped the magnitude of this problem going forward, I am only the second person to mention this to them it would seem. Other games not affected store their save data by Steam user id number or suchlike, meaning when booting those games they are seen as "clean" and not tainted by another (desktop) users save files.Ĭertainly something that needs to be fixed urgently I would think, the first time I lose progress in a game I am going to be mightily annoyed. I think I've narrowed this problem down to any games that store save data in what would be %LOCALAPPDATA%\etc\etc on Windows will be affected by the single Linux "SteamOS User" login on the desktop (as you mention earlier regarding big picture mode). Hopefully hear back from Steam support soon to at least acknowledge that this is indeed a problem. It is Valve who need to make this slightly more foolproof. And that's if it even works as one would expect, say, running Ubuntu with KDE Plasma. You'd need to login to the Deck, change to desktop mode and make sure you are logged into your own Linux user - too much faffing. I know I could teach my kids to make sure they are logged into their own Linux user, but that's not the way the Deck is setup when it is switched on. going to desktop mode from any profile will just go to the desktop of the logged in Linux user - too much micro managing for my liking, esp where kids are involved and they are used to just logging into their own Windows accounts and then their own Steam accounts. If I create another user, login to that, then I think the way things are it would just remain the same with the save problem, just attached to a different desktop user. Obviously what is needed for some of the saves to work properly is for a Steam users account to be attached to a SteamOS (Linux) account so that when "go to desktop mode" is selected it doesn't just default to the "SteamOS user". Not going to bother messing with that just now in case it borks something else though. So, extra users appear to be able to be added easily enough from the desktop settings. So, what is up with that, because it patently does NOT work properly! Yes, and each account on a Steam Deck will keep its own local save data and settings. Is this on Valve's list to be "fixed"? I really do not want to be installing Windows just to have this working as it should.Ĭan you have multiple Steam accounts on one Steam Deck? Instead I now have to micro manage every use of it. I of course expected some early teething issues, I am a serial early adopter, but when I read that Gabe said that family sharing did indeed work I had no qualms about shelling out for the 512GB model. I daren't try loading something we have actually both played without manually copying my local save from another machine! If they just use a save slot then how are they meant to continue the game on their PC on their own profile? By taking a chance that it's not going to mess up the progress of others on the same save? No thanks. I'm going to test all this later as one of my kids wants to play this but it's looking like one big hassle if they want to use their own cloud save. Luckily this is a game they haven't started yet and there are save slots in this game, but only 3, and I may need 4. One example I can give is the "great on deck" verified game "Spyro Reignited Trilogy" - loading this on one of my kids profiles just copies my local save. Some games work fine - they must store the local data in some other way, but others do not, rendering family sharing and cloud saves useless. So why does this not work "properly" on the Steam Deck?Ĭlearly every user profile that is added is going to need access to their own Linux environment or what is going to happen is that some games that save locally are going to get their data, and then the cloud data, overwritten if they are played by other profiles. I really hope this is something that can be fixed quickly as I do NOT want to be losing progress in any of my games.Ī big, big draw of getting games on Steam is the family sharing aspect and with 3 kids and myself I really don't want to be buying potentially 4 copies of games and obviously family sharing works well in this respect - the vast majority of games support it, well over 1500 in my case. Well my wild elation at receiving my Steam Deck yesterday has turned to mild disappointment when I added myself and my kids profiles to the device.
